The Open Door Policy was John Hay's (the secretary of state) clever diplomatic efforts to preserve Chinese territorial integrity and maintain American access to China. It attempted to protect American interests in China by asking European countries to pledge equal trading rights in China and the protection of its territory from foreign annexation. It also reaffirmed the principle that all countries should have equal access to any Chinese port open to trade. The Boxer Rebellion was an anti-Chinese revolt that brought military intervention by Western troops, including Americans.
The Big-Stick Policy was created by Theodore Roosevelt. It was his belief that presidents should engage diplomacy by also maintain a strong military readiness to back up their policy. The Roosevelt Corollary was Roosevelt's extension of the Monroe Doctrine, stating that the U.S. has the right to protect its economic interest in South and Central America by using military force. A war was fought in Asia over control of Korea known as the Russo-Japanese War. The Gentlemen's Agreement of 1907 that ended a Japanese-American crisis over treatment of Japanese immigrants to the United States. The Great White Fleet was the Large U.S. naval force sent by Roosevelt on a peaceful but highly visible vogage around the world in 1907-1909. The ships were welcomed when they arrived in Tokyo Bay.
